OBJECTIVES:

The White Sail Class is to encourage those with cruising boats including those who would not normally be engaged in racing to venture out to the water; improve boat-handling skills, seamanship; enjoy racing for fun; meet and enjoy the company of like-minded boat owners.  These Class Rules are designed to ensure fair racing for all.

QUALIFYING BOATS:

White Sail Boats be mono hull, with minimum of 2 sleeping bunks, internal seating accommodation for 4 persons, an inboard engine, at least one head and a cooker.

AUTHORITY:

The Dublin Bay White Sail Class forms a class and races within Dublin Bay Sailing Club in accordance with that organization’s Notice of Race, section A, 1.1 (DBSC Yearbook 2012).  This section refers to the Racing Rules of Sailing, the Prescriptions of ISA and the Rules of the Class.

IDENTIFICATION:

Boats shall display the Numeral Pennant “5” and the Class Pennant – white with a blue “W” on the backstay if applicable.

HANDICAPPING:

Boats who wish to race under ECHO and/or IRC handicap shall have a current valid certificate.  New entrants to the class may be given an initial loading of up to 10% on their ECHO handicap.

RIG & SAILS:

Sails shall not be Hi-Tech; that is made from high modulus materials such as woven ply and/or laminated ply made from aramids and HMPE. Aramid is marketed under trade names such as Kevlar and Twaron, and HMPE under trade names such as Spectra and Dyneema. Carbon Fibre is included in this list of materials not permitted.  The Dublin Bay White Sail Class reserves the ultimate authority to determine whether or not a particular sail cloth satisfies this definition.  This right will be waived where alternative arrangements have been made with Race or Regatta organizers for independent assessment and classification of sail materials.

A boat shall be fitted with a complete headsail furling system (including at least a drum, furling headfoil and top swivel) or a self tacking headsail with track. Only a single headsail shall be used while racing, except that additionally storm jibs as defined by IRC Special Regulation 4.26 (Appendix 1, IRC Measurement Definitions) may be used.

Except in the case of significant damage the same mainsail and headsail shall be used for all races in any series of races. (Ref. IRC 26.8)

Sail identification number on main sail is required.

Spinnakers, Bloopers, Gennikers, Code Zero or similar sails are not allowed.

Whisker or spinnaker poles are allowed for headsails.

Corinthian Rule:

No professionals (unless sailing their own boat) are permitted on board any boat.

SAFETY:

Boats shall be up to IASF Category 4. The safety of a boat and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the person in charge who shall do their best to ensure that the boat is fully found, thoroughly seaworthy and adequately manned. The person in charge accepts that the boat’s decision to participate in a race or continue racing is theirs alone. Neither these rules nor any of an Organising Authority in any way limits or reduces the complete and unlimited responsibility of the owner or person in charge. In the interest of safety, members are requested not to mount their anchors on the bow when racing.

COMMITTEE:

The Committee shall comprise 4 members in accordance with DBSC requirements:

Captain; Vice-Captain; Safety Officer and Record Keeper.  In addition the outgoing Captain, if still a member of the Class may be invited to stay on the Committee for one year after his/her Captaincy.
